10 Reasons Why I Love My Job…

10.  Music: I’ve always been a huge fan of the arts and music throughout my childhood. I still remember having my bright yellow Care Bears record as a young child and singing along with a wooden spoon as my microphone.  Thankfully my taste matured and I fell in love with classical, jazz and music in general.  As a publicist, I get to hear new music regularly.  This fall I am promoting some amazing new projects like from worship band The Glorious Unseen (“The Hope That Lies In You” August 25th) or the ridiculous new Thousand Foot Krutch (“Welcome to the Masquerade” September 8th) or the October release coming up from Kutless. I also love working with newer artists this spring one such artist is Phillip LaRue.  Whatever it is, I love getting to be involved with music.

9.  Fun Times:  My job allows me to have a huge variety of “fun.”  I love getting to watch bands have fun on stage – such as Hawk Nelson – those guys most certainly have a great time entertaining their screaming teen fans.  Despite the crazy work hours and hard work, my job does allow “fun.”

8.  Creativity: I’ve always loved projects — you know the kind most students FEAR when assigned.  I loved doing book projects, English projects, Science Fair — I know I’m totally labeling myself as a nerd right now, but I seriously love going over the top with creativity.  With my job as a publicist, I have to be creative with how I pitch, with how I present an artist. If you are a Mac person and haven’t tried Pages — you need to get it.  It is the word processing program, and a great way to be creative.

7.  New Technology: If someone had told me two years ago that I’d be on Twitter updating daily, I would’ve laughed.  I thought what the heck is this Twitter thing.  I even remember Facebook’s birth and thinking “Oh they are just trying to be like MySpace.”  With my job, if I don’t follow new technology and keep up, I’m left behind.  This would apply to so many people in different fields – keep up!

6.  Authors: I began my career in PR just working with bands and musicians, but last year I worked with one of my favorite people, Christa Ann Banister.  She released her second in the chick-lit series on serial dater Sydney Alexander.  It was so much fun to break into a new world of media with a book and author.

5.  Artists: I LOVE the artists I represent.  They make my job so enjoyable.  It is one thing to love what you do or the field that you are in – but when you admire who you work with that is an added bonus.

4.  The BIG picture: I love being a part of something bigger than myself.  In the music industry, there are so many spokes to the wheel that no one person can take it all on — I love being a part of something and doing my share.

3.  Behind the Scenes: Someone once asked if you have to be an outgoing person to be a publicist — I honestly don’t believe that you have to be outgoing, but you have to be a go-getter and someone who wants to be behind the scenes.  It is rare that the publicist is remembered when the artist thinks of those who have helped shape his or her career — we are behind the scenes – you can’t look for gratitude because sometimes you just don’t get it, but enjoy being behind the scenes and making things happen.

2.  Telling a Story: I love telling someone’s story.  It is such a joy to retell an amazing testimony or story about a band or song that they had written.

1.  People are Reached: Sometimes I forget how much what I do actually reaches the consumer or the fan.  I’m reminded when I attend a concert of one of my bands that they are daily impacting someone’s life with what they do — and by being an extension of that I’m also helping people be reached.  What more could you want?

There you have it — just a few reasons why I love my job.

Why do you love what you do?  I hope that you know!  Make a list and keep it tucked somewhere near your workspace so that when the job gets rough, you can be reminded why you do your job.
