UN Conference on Haiti – New York March 31st
Haitians tell the world of their hopes and fears through the lens of internationally renowned photographer
PHOTOGRAPHER JEREMY COWART TEAMS UP WITH OXFAM PHOTOS TO BE EXHIBITED AT THE UNITED NATIONS
NASHVILLE, TN –March 24, 2010: As international institutions and governments are set to meet at the United Nations in New York for a much-expected conference on Haiti, acclaimed photographer Jeremy Cowart, in partnership with international agency Oxfam, will be exhibiting his work in the same corridors of the UN’s headquarters. The meeting will discuss the reconstruction plan for the country.
Cowart’s work, shot only days after the January 12th earthquake, captured the strength, hope and spirit of Haitians. (http://www.voicesofhaiti.com)
The aid agency (http://www.oxfam.org) decided to pair with the photographer as his work in Haiti shows similarity with an Oxfam’s project in makeshift camps and streets of Haiti. Oxfam did a survey that will convey what ordinary Haitians expect and wish for the future. The survey will be released days before the March 31st conference.
Cowart’s project - “Voices of Haiti” – depicts the dreams and fears of Haitians in their own words. The poignant photo essay will be exhibited for over a week at the United where 15 of the 60 images will be put on display. Following the conference in New York, the images will travel to Washington D.C. to be on exhibit from April 12-16th.
“These photos not only tell their stories, but they have spurred others to find creative ways to use their talents,” said Jeremy Cowart. “This is about the Haitian’s voices being heard and people from around the world responding to those voices – such as the UN and our governments.”
